Haymarket takes home four wins at BSME Awards 2022

Gideon Spanier, Kate Magee, Chris Barker and Tim Scott all came top of their competitive shortlists  

Haymarket Media Group won top prizes at this year’s British Society of Magazine Editors Awards.

Campaign‘s Gideon Spanier won editor-in-chief/editorial director of the year and Chris Barker won B2B art director of the year.

Management Today’s (MT) Kate Magee won editor of the year, B2B, and Tim Scott also won cover of the year, B2B for MT, following a vote by attendees on the night.

The BSME Awards, which were held at the Pan Pacific in London, are considered the top awards for magazine editors, journalists and art directors in the UK.

Judges said Spanier, the UK editor-in-chief of Campaign, was “clearly a leader in our industry” and added: “This is an editorial director who does it all: from punchy opinion pieces to using data to inform content that’ll drive subscriptions. All whilst campaigning (pun intended) for the media industry to hold itself to account.”

Barker, who is senior art director, won praise from the BSME judges for his “innovative and very clever approaches to the brand’s content across all media” and described him as a “champion of illustration”.

The judges were impressed by Kate’s drive and determination in her first year in the post at MT, commenting “in 12 months, she has refreshed and reinvigorated a venerable brand demonstrating all the best traits of a pioneering editor.” 

Management Today’s Summer 2022 cover tackled the topic of executive burnout in a punchy and attention-grabbing way, leading to Tim Scott picking up the cover of the year award.
