Breaking boundaries with the Mercedes EQS 580, setting a new global standard for electric vehicle range

Autocar India and Mercedes-Benz India have achieved a Guinness World Record for the longest journey by an electric vehicle on a single charge. Driving a Mercedes EQS 580, the team covered an impressive 949.0 km from Bengaluru to Navi Mumbai, surpassing the previous record of 916.74 km set in the UK by a Ford Mustang Mach-E.

The made-in-India EQS 580 was chosen for its incredible efficiency, boasting a claimed range of 857 km and a drag coefficient of just 0.20. Remarkably, the distance covered exceeded the car’s certified range by over 10%, achieving an efficiency of 8.80 km/kWh.

The journey, completed over two days, saw the team navigating various challenges, including heavy monsoon rains, traffic diversions, and even a tire puncture. A key moment occurred when the car’s state of charge (SoC) dropped to 3% after covering 884 km, but regenerative braking helped the team recover enough energy to push through the final 30 km, finishing with 0% SoC.

Autocar India’s road tester, Rahul Kakar, who piloted the EQS sedan in this record-breaking run said: “It’s by far the most challenging test I have undertaken, as, in the past, I never chased to break an existing record.”
