Haymarket partners with BSME and Caitlin Moran to Launch Young Writers’ Prize

Targeting talent aged 18-25 who may lack the traditional connections or financial resources to break into the industry

Haymarket Media Group is delighted to be among the founding supporters of the inaugural BSME Young Writers’ Prize.

Launched by the British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME) and columnist and author Caitlin Moran, this new award is designed to discover exceptional writing talent aged 18–25 from across the UK, specifically targeting young people from overlooked backgrounds who may lack the traditional connections or financial resources to break into the industry.

This is a natural extension of Haymarket’s ongoing commitment to nurturing the next generation of talent. A vibrant media industry depends on a diversity of voices and fresh perspectives, and Haymarket is proud to be part of an initiative that dismantles barriers to entry.

With more than 1,200 employees across the UK, US, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Singapore, and India, Haymarket’s 80+ market-leading brands – including Campaign, What Car?, PR Week, Marketing Week, ENDS Report, Wonderly, and GP – provide an influential platform for storytelling.

Speaking about Haymarket’s commitment to these values, Kevin Costello, Global Chief Executive, said: “We’re excited to see the wealth of new talent the BSME Young Writers’ Prize will undoubtedly uncover. This is a great initiative from Caitlin Moran and the BSME, and aligns perfectly with everything we stand for at Haymarket. From our focus on quality education and partnerships for good, to our unwavering commitment to supporting the next generation. With a global network of expert content creators living deep within their markets across editorial, live events, audio, video and more, Haymarket is proud to support these aspiring writers and help them succeed in an industry we care so much about.”

Two of Haymarket’s editors, Sophie-Marie Odum (Wonderly’s content team lead and editor of Motability’s Lifestyle magazine) and Gideon Spanier (UK editor-in-chief of Campaign), sit on the BSME Committee, which will be involved in the judging process to select the winners.

Gideon Spanier, Campaign’s UK editor-in-chief and BSME committee member, said: “The BSME wants to do more to find and nurture a broader mix of talent from across the UK and it’s fantastic that Haymarket is supporting the new Young Writers’ Prize. As Caitlin Moran says about her own career, funding and mentoring can make a huge difference for a budding journalist looking to get into the industry. We hope this annual prize will open doors and inspire a new generation to join the brilliant world of magazine journalism.”

The overall winner of the BSME Young Writers’ Prize will receive a £12,000 cash prize, one year of personal mentorship from Caitlin Moran, as well as work experience placements offered to the list of highly commended writers with leading media companies.

This initiative is a testament to the joint spirit of the media community, as Haymarket is collaborating alongside fellow sponsors and partners, including Mantis, Reach plc, Future PLC, Bauer, Stylist, Tickaroo, Anthem, The Slow Journalism Company, Ralph Magazine, and C+D.

The prize is now open for entries until 8 May 2026, with the winner to be announced at the BSME Awards in November.
