Employees were recognised for outstanding work spanning seven categories
On Wednesday 13 December, Haymarket’s global chief executive, Kevin Costello, revealed the winners of The Work Awards 2023. For the first time, the company’s prestigious internal awards were divided into two, to properly recognise Haymarket’s People in June and the Work they create in December. The seven new categories reflect the hard work, creativity, innovation and Impact of employees worldwide over the past 12 months and are a crucial part of Haymarket’s global calendar.
The first winner was the HDFN Companion website design team, taking the top spot for ‘Design Excellence’. The project, launched by the Medical Communications Group in the US, aimed to design a patient-oriented brand with a scalable site design, while also creating engaging content, easy navigation, and accessibility options. The judging panel were looking for extraordinary artwork, graphics, infographics, illustrations, video, and photography, with visually compelling content and an enhanced reader experience.

The award for ‘Campaign of the Year’, went to Haymarket Business Media’s (HBM), British Podcast Awards team for executing one of the most impactful and successful advertising and marketing campaigns of 2023. The new British Podcast Awards campaign targeted corporate audiences and passionate podcasters, combining B2B promotion for entries and B2C engagement for listeners. This resulted in over 1,000 entries while full coverage of the shortlist, and winners across all social platforms demonstrated value to entrants too.

‘Live Event of the Year’ went to the CIPD’s Festival of Work. The CIPD Festival of Work adapted to a free format in 2023 to attract new audiences. Despite a range of challenges, the team worked closely with their key stakeholders and delivered an event that was more inspiring and memorable than ever. In particular it was recognised for its originality, innovation, and creativity.

Speaking on their win, Hannah Capstick, Head of Content, Wonderly memberships, said: “The people are the most important aspect of making something a success and you can achieve great things when you work collaboratively as a team.”
HBM’s ‘Talking General Practice podcast’ from GP were awarded for ‘Editorial Excellence’ due to their groundbreaking documentary podcast on assisted dying.
Speaking about the documentary, Emma Bower, Editor of GP, said: “The documentary explores the issue in light of a possible law change in Scotland. It looks at the views of GPs and patients, and explains how assisted dying would work by talking to politicians involved in the legislation to be debated early this year. [They] also talk to a GP from California who worked to legalise assisted dying there and who now helps patients have an assisted death – her husband chose an assisted death in 2021, which she speaks very movingly about. The episode was [also] shortlisted for podcast of the year at the Medical Journalist Association awards.”

The podcast showcased original, engaging, compelling, creative content which resonated with the desired audiences and provided clear engagement results. It featured interviews with consultant psychologists, and the weekly episodes balanced negative news with positive stories.
The award for ‘Outstanding work with Impact’ went to MIMS Learning with ‘Complex contraception education for clinicians’. The MIMS Learning team developed a high-quality module on sexual assault and forensic gynaecology, educating doctors and nurses on patient assessment, safety, STI screening, preservation of evidence, and psychological support.

The module was written by a forensic clinician and its aim was to eradicate gender inequality in healthcare. MIMS Learning employees were recognised for their work positively influencing and contributing to a better future – in alignment with Haymarket’s Impact strategy and focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: Gender Equality, Climate Action and Quality Education.
Speaking about future initiatives, Pat Anderson, Editor for MIMS, said: “We’d like to do more towards [supporting] the Impact goals, and this year we’re launching a health inequalities campaign that will focus – among other things – on better healthcare for women and gender equality.”
Haymarket’s Automotive Studio took the crown for ‘Commercial Excellence’. Despite challenges in the UK car industry due to the pandemic, Brexit, the war in Ukraine, the chip crisis and the surge in the cost-of-living, Automotive Studio, have grown by diversifying its business, forming powerful partnerships and retaining talented teammates, resulting in strong client relationships and many new exciting opportunities.

Finally, the award for ‘Outstanding Business Contribution’ (and Haymarket’s overall global winner for 2023) went to Haymarket Germany for TASPO’s digital rebrand, supported by HBM. Working closely with colleagues from HBM, the TASPO team successfully transitioned the business in line with HBM’s digital strategy. The project’s success is a testament to the constant dialogue, commitment, trust and respect among the two teams, the results of which have already proved impressive.

A huge and well-deserved congratulations to all of the winners of Haymarket’s The Work Awards 2023, who have been recognised for their brilliant work, remarkable content, innovative solutions, and impactful campaigns over the last 12 months.
